Ketchup

Today we discussed measuring and following a recipe! This is my first time I have made ketchup so I did most of the work. We chopped onions, vine, and cherry tomatoes put them in the instant pot together to stew.

The above link is the recipe I followed. Well I followed to a point. This recipe called for plum or paste tomatoes the store I went to only had vine and cherry so those are the ones I used. I also did not add the celery seasoning.

I filled a large bowl with water and white vinegar to wash the tomatoes!
Sliced and diced the onion
Charlotte stirred while I cut the tomatoes and put them in
We measured everything out
Started to boil
Charlotte stirred first
Lucas decided he wanted in on it
Kaarina participated last
We finally reduced enough to transfer to a sieve to get the skin and seeds out of the juice.
Charlotte cranked it first
Kaarina did the rest
They both added the rest of the ingredients
Now we wait until it reduces again.

This process took way longer then expected. We had to stop reducing so we could go grocery shopping and I was going to finish reducing it on Saturday.

My son had different plans though and dumped it down the sink to wash the pot! He was in a bad mood because I had help do up the dishes all day to help. I understood this and said that I was very appreciative of his help and him doing the dishes for me. I also apologized in case I forgot to say it through the day while he was helping.

I was so angry though our hard work literally went down the drain. Not to mention all that money that I used to buy 12lbs of tomatoes just to be thrown in the sewer and not even be tasted. Anyhow he is 13 and I remember not doing the right thing all the time growing up so I gave him grace and understanding instead.

I really wanted to ground him or give him more to do. Alas I put my hands in my face and took some deep breaths and didn’t say anything until I was ready. I knew if I spoke immediately I would have been cussing and said things I would have regretted but I have been working on not reacting and staying calm.

I well be buying canned tomatoes the next time.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend! Thank you for stopping by to read or look at the pictures. Have a great day.
